Boyle competitors bring home the medals as Summer Calendar of events draw to a close
The summer calender of Community Games events came to a close for Boyle competitors last night. The final event was gymnastics and this was held in Ballaghadreen just last night. This event was preceeded by a very busy and successful weekend of athletics in Ballyleague, where 35 young people from Boyle took part in various track events including relays. The Under 12 girls relay team did themselves proud by taking Gold and securing their place in the National Finals in Athlone in August. The team was made up of Sinead Glennon, Aoife Valentine, Mary Ellen Halligan and Ruth Cox. Mary Ellen's sister Sarah will be joining them in Athlone as she also took gold in the Under 16 girls 1500 metres. Ruth Cox also recieved a medal in her individual race, a silver medal in the under 12 600 metres.
Many of the competitors did very well in their heats and qualified for the finals on the day. Again a huge thanks to Jackie Valentine and Boyle Athletic Club for not only coaching the young people for the event but also working tirelessly on both days making sure every child was where they were meant to be for their race. No easy task!
Boyle featured very strongly in Ballaghadreen's gymnastics event. This is just the second year that Boyle has participated in gymnastics and they will be back for more!
Kate Murphy under 8 girls, Orla Keville under 14 girls and Enda Carr under 12 boys all received gold medals and will now represent Roscommon in the National Finals.
Aisling Feely under 8 girls, Katie Simon under 10 girls and Sinead Glennon under 12 girls all won silver medals.
Roseanna Callan under 10 girls, Shane Carr under 10 boys and Ciara Sherrin under 12 girls all got third place and bronze medals.
Well done to all the participants who have spent alot of time and effort training for this event it has certainly paid off.
